«Feeling good about your country»
Dave: Hi Kate. Now, is there anything that makes you feel good about your country?
Kate: Hello Dave. Yes, this is something we call national pride. Pride is a feeling of
pleasure and satisfaction that you get because you or people or places connected with
you have done something good.
Dave: So it is a good feeling. We can also say 'to take pride in something' so we feel
good about doing something.
Kate: Some people in Britain or the United Kingdom - recently felt proud when it
was announced the first ever British astronaut is to go to the International Space
Station. An astronaut is a person who has trained to go into space.
Dave: We will talk more about this and what makes us proud soon. First I need to set
you a question, Kate.
Kate: And hopefully I will take pride in getting it right, Dave?
Dave: Maybe. Do you know the nationality of the first astronauts to live in the
International Space Station back in the year 2000?
34
Kate: I'm going to say Russian.
Dave: I will let you know the answer later on. So, let's talk more about national
pride.Commander Tim Peake is to be the first British man to go to the International
Space Station.
Kate: Many people in the UK feel pride that he is going to fly the flag for Britain. In
other words, he is going to represent Britain in space.
Dave: Yes, it's a good feeling to know that a person from your country is involved in
space exploration.
Kate: Well let's hear from Tim Peake. What words does he use to describe his feelings?
Dave: He feels good! He says he is delighted so very happy and he described being
chosen for the mission as an honour, so something he is proud to do.
Kate: And finally, he said it was a true privilege. That means he is very lucky to have
the opportunity to do it. I suppose, I would feel the same if I was the first astronaut to
represent my home country, Scotland.
Dave: Scotland, Kate? Not the United Kingdom!
Kate: Good point, I am both. As you know, the United Kingdom is made up of smaller
countries, one of which is Scotland where I am from. Dave, I know you're from
England which is also part of the United Kingdom, or the UK. Do you take pride in
being English or British?
Dave: Both. I am proud of our English history and countryside and I take pride in
seeing England winning at football, sometimes! But I am also proud that England is
part of the United Kingdom and how we have such a diverse population so many
different types of people.
Kate: That's true and in the 2012 Olympics we were proud to see British athletes win
lots of medals.
Dave: Well, the British are not as proud as some countries are. A BBC survey
discovered people from developing and middle-income countries said the way their
team performed at the Olympics was very important to their national pride. So people
and places can make give you pride. One thing I am proud of is the BBC the British
35
Broadcasting Corporation. It is something that is respected around theworld, something
in the United Kingdom we can be proud of.
Kate: Yes, I think it's when you're abroad, in another country, that you realise what
makes you proud of your home country.
Dave: Yes, when I am abroad and I see something made in Britain or if I hear music
by a British band, it makes me patriotic. That means showing love for your country
and being proud of it. Earlier I asked you if you knew the nationality of the first
astronauts to live in the International Space Station back in the year 2000?
Kate: I said Russian.
Dave: You were sort of right. It was a bit of a trick question. The nationalities of the
first people to go to the International Space Station were Russian and American.
Thanks Kate. That's all we have time for today. Goodbye!
Kate: Bye!

«
Business news» на уровне B2.
«Business news»
The first item in the news today is the recent elections that took place across the
country. This was a crucial vote, which may see a dramatic change in how the country
develops over the coming years. Overall, a 54.5 per cent voter turnout was registered.
This represents an increase of 11 per cent over the previous election and six per cent
above the average for the past 50 years. There has also been a slight change in
demographics, with an increase in youth turnout in the 18- to 24- and 24- to 29-year-
old brackets. Despite this increase, young people are still less likely to vote than older
people; 84 per cent of voters in the 70 plus age group came to the polling stations.
Moving on, the global digital powerhouse ONK today posted quarterly results
which were above forecast. Back in March, Tim Bolling, CEO, issued a profit warning
over fears that there would be losses following the recall of their leading product, the
40d device. In fact, the company posted quarterly revenue of US$14.8 billion which
represents an increase of 11 per cent from the same quarter a year ago. They also
announced that they had sold 21 million 40d devices over the quarter. The company
has provided the information that with this level of revenue, there will be a gross
margin of 34 to 35 per cent, ultimately leading to a US$1.20 per share cash dividend
awarded to shareholders.
And in our final news item we ask, will we soon be saying goodbye to coins and
notes forever? The nationwide trend of using cashless payment options is increasing.
There are a number of reasons for this development. A key reason for this is a growing
interest in reducing the number of items people need to leave their homes with. As
almost everyone carries a smartphone with them, and many people also have
smartwatches, the ability to pay for things using one of these two technologies is
particularly appealing. More and more retailers are accepting cashless payments and in
some cases they’ve stopped accepting cash altogether.

Post Listening (Послетекстовый этап)
1. What is the text about?
2. What is the latest business news that you know?
первоначального уровня знаний;
заданий;
